Prof. Richard
E. Vatz
- Dr. Vatz is
a tenured full professor of Rhetoric and Communication at Towson University
(Baltimore, Md.) where he has served for 27 years.
- He won 4 outstanding
teaching (awarded to 30 faculty a year) awards at Towson in the five years
they were awarded. He was the 1994 winner of the Thomas Szasz Award.
- He has written
over 250 articles and reviews on rhetoric and psychiatry, including: Thomas
Szasz: Primary Values and Major Contentions (Prometheus Books: 1983), a chapter,
"Thomas Szasz and the Rhetorical Paradigm of Psychiatry," in Discovering the
History of Psychiatry (Oxford University Press, 1994) and articles in The
Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and elsewhere.
- He has appeared
to discuss issues on psychiatry on CNN (including "Crossfire"), "The Phil
Donahue Show" and "Larry King Live."
- He is the longest-serving
member of Towson University's University Senate.
